Jan Mayen Island

One of the real targets for me on this trip was achieved today - I booked the trip hoping to be able to add Jan Mayen to my list of visited islands.

Getting ashore here wasn’t a foregone conclusion, the weather here is often too wild to make landing possible.  On last years version of this trip a landing wasn’t possible at all - and on our visit getting off again was fairly entertaining (and involved several people getting very wet).

Ortelius was the first boat to visit this year - and we got a warm welcome from the 18 Norwegian meteorological and military staff based here.
