A Response

On the 4th of June
we sat outside
under a blue and occasionally cloudy sky.
A seagull soared.
The sun shone.
The moon made a surprise appearance.
We talked about May and Corbyn,
Manchester and London,
and the clouds
on the future’s ever uncertain horizon.
We drank red wine
and the world’s edges softened a little.
The light breeze turned cooler.

On the 4th of June
I gazed up at the blue and occasionally cloudy sky
and, although everything that day was tainted/ tinged
by all the dreadful things,
I marvelled at the enduring moon
and the miracle of wings
and appreciated friendship
and the comfort that love brings.
