Fodder for thought

Continuing on from yesterday and green spaces not being a common sight in Delhi, grass is a valuable commodity, so it seems. The manicured park of yesterday is owned and maintained by a private club. The grounds are huge, well tended to and include a restaurant, ice cream shop and swimming pool.

The park we went to today is cared for by the local government. It's got a variety of plants and herbs and a huge area filled with sunflowers, though it's also unkempt in parts and has large sections that are barren and neglected.

This lady has been allowed to fill her sack with grass clippings. She cuts the overgrown sections of green with a sickle. This is her livelihood. She will sell the cuttings to farmers to supplement the fodder for their livestock. During these peak summer months everything is in short supply except intense heat.

The sickle is an agricultural tool with curved blade has been in continuous use around the world since the Iron Age.
