Ancient and modern at Berkhamsted

We went over to the Royal Castle of  Berkhamsted. Started in the 11th century it has been through lots of change. Now maintained by English heritage, it is a pleasant spot for a walk, a picnic or a look back via the information centre.

The castle was a motte and bailey design and the motte (tower) was on the mound shown in todays blip.

By the side of the castle is the West  Coast Mainline and alongside that is the canal, as can be seen in the extras. The old picture is of the station 1838.
