Maruia Falls

After a cold start this morning, the sun appeared early afternoon.  We took a drive to the Maruia Falls - somewhere I haven't been in a while.  If you look carefully you will see a rainbow amongst the water spray.

The state highway - being the only way from the Top of the South Island to Canterbury, was busy this afternoon.  I suppose there were a lot of people travelling back from Christchurch after watching the Lions/Crusaders rugby game last night.

Our wee town has approximately 80 road workers based here over the coming winter months.  Their job will be soley ensuring that the State Highway stays open, and ensuring that any repair work is completed as soon as possible.  We've been advised that if it snows on the Lewis Pass it will be closed; no using chains, it will be closed until it is safe to travel.  That is going to cause some inconvenience to some people/businesses, but due to the amount of traffic on the roads, they can't be rescuing people if they get caught out in the bad weather.  And I suppose that is fair.  It just means that there are going to be a lot of people stuck in wee towns like ours with no where to go.  Lets hope the road stays open.
