St Kilda mailboat

from the 1870s letters and 'shopping lists' were put inside a cocoa tin and  inside the wooden 'boat' seen here and put into the Atlantic Ocean with a sealskin float to be sailed by wind and tide to the nearest land. About 50 miles to the east lie the Outer Hebrides. The islanders were evacuated in the 1930s
