Mating in the pond

The pond has two new inhabitants. A colleague had a Black Moor Goldfish (extra) and Dotty here, a Ryukin goldfish that are now fare to big for his aquarium.

We will see how it will go with them in the pond. Both the Black Moor and the Ryukin goldfish are so-called fancy goldfish. They are the result of selective breeding to give them more "fancy" shapes. Because of the unnatural shapes they are poor swimmers and have poor sight. Personally I dont like when we people mess up with nature just to have unusual pets.
Anyhow Dotty and Blackie are most welcome as rescue pets and I will do my best for them to survive the shifting seasons in the pond. If they don't survive they will at least have the most enjoyable summer holiday ever with  plenty of space and a lot of new friends!

However Dotty may find the boys to much at times. During the mating game the boys chase the female and push her on her side like you can see on the photo. The female may drop her egg for them to fertilise. If I have understood it correct the Black Moor eat them so we will see if I will have spawn as I have every year.

It's nice to see that Dotty and Blackie are enjoying pond life.
