An unsolved mystery - who killed the mole?

I seem to find a dead mole on this particular footpath every year, sometimes several in a year, usually in the summer. But why here and who or what has killed them? The moles always appear well fed and healthy (apart from being dead) and have no visible injuries. The footpath runs along the edge of woodland and grass pasture. It is largely unused - in ten years I've never met anyone on it - and miles from the nearest house or farm. The location, and absence of chew marks seems to suggest that the guilty party isn't a domestic cat or dog. Perhaps a weasel or stoat then - with fine puncture marks that I can't see through the thick velvety fur? But weasels and stoats don't dig. So something makes the moles come to the surface - In dry weather they may search for worms on the surface or could it be that the victims have been driven out by rival moles? Either way, this would give the weasel or stoat the opportunity to catch the mole. There are other possible predators in the area - I frequently see tawny owls and buzzards. The mystery is why would any of these predators abandon their prey? Or is it death by natural causes? Answers on a postcard.
