Caves of Artá

Within a short walk of the beach at Canyamel are the extraordinary Caves of Artá. Today was in fact our second visit to them, tacked onto the end of a long hot day that included beach - of course - and taking a trip along the coast on the Coral Boat (a slightly surreal experience full of pizza and Spanish pop music!).

Though not very commercialised (you can just about get a drink and an icecream) the caves are unbelievably grand and beautiful, like a series of huge cathedrals. I took lots of pictures, all in available (electric) light, with the camera balanced on iron railings as I didn't have a tripod. I was astonished they came out in focus, but they did. And as you come up and out of them againyou look straight out over the sea. A place of Tritons and goddesses. Or, for Hobbitomanes, Moria.. the Glittering Caves of Aglarond..
