Fluid inclusion studies

Down in the micro level today, trying to get clear pictures of 10 micron fluid inclusions suspended in clear quartz crystals within a metamorphosed rock. The 'bubbles' in this image are tiny voids in the crystal that contain some of the fluids that the crystal formed from. The classic 'fried egg' bubble is a bubble of CO2 vapour (the yoke) within a inclusion of CO2 liquid (the white). The blue spines are crystals of pyroxene intruding into the quartz crystal.
