Songs of Sorrow

No cats today.

I rode to Mäntsälä to see this memorial. It was raised by a group of evacuees from the part of Karelia taken over by USSR at the end of the WWII. It's also a family issue, as my father's family was evacuated, too – but to another part of the remaining Finnish mainland. I was quite moved by it. The inscription Soitto on suruista tehty can be translated Songs Are Made Out of Sorrows. Karelia was renowned for its folk singers, whose work ended up in Kalevala, our national epic.
