Godwit to woo

We set off first thing for a 7-mile ramble taking in Pagham and Sidlesham. However, on the first stretch at Pagham there were so many different species of bird already that Mr DA decided he'd rather stick to the nature reserve than following the inland part of the route. I wasn't going to argue as this involved going through a field of cows, so we put the instructions away for another day and headed off round the foreshore. It was perfect weather, sunny and 20+ degrees, and we had a very enjoyable walk with a picnic lunch in the middle.

Pictured is, I believe, a male godwit in his reddish breeding plumage. Godwits used to be a popular dish back in the day, apparently. There were lots of them around along with curlews, lapwings, egrets, herons, cormorants, to name but a few. Yes, we are turning into fully fledged birders now.
