Pictorial blethers

Ten to four

I posted a blip of this armillary sundial in Benmore Gardens the other week, and wondered at the time just how easy it would be actually to tell the time from it when the sun was shining. Today I had my answer: it works like a dream and it's completely obvious.

The instructions tell you to look for the strongest shadow on the strip with the hours marked on it. And behold, the strongest shadow is quite distinct from the other shadows, and here it falls a short distance from the 4 on the dial. It was indeed ten minutes to four in the afternoon.

My extra photo is of the ornamental pond looking lovely.
