Wound up in Wexford

Elephant hawk moth caterpillar

W came across a couple of these whilst removing some willow herb that was growing where we didn't want it.  Apparently the moth is named for the shape of the caterpillar - like an elephant's trunk.

Several people have blipped the moth this year.  They're really pretty.  I've never seen one, wondered if we had them around here.  Since the primary food for the caterpillar is willow herb, and we have plenty of that, I might have expected to see them.  Well, we obviously have at least 2 - I shall have to keep an eye out for them.
