Dockray Footbridge

Today's the day ....................... to change ends

This is the Dockray Footbridge which crosses the River Kent at the north end of Kendal.  It is a delightful little bridge, suspended from cables between lattice steel towers at each end.  It is used daily by pupils on their way to the Queen Katherine School, one of the two secondary schools in Kendal - and by workers at the Mintsfeet Industrial Estate.

It actually started life in 1907 at the opposite end of the town linking Romney Road and Burton Road.  It was a popular footway for pedestrians over the river - although apparently, on one occasion, an intrepid motorist drove a small car across it.  It wasn't until 1990 that the present vehicle-carrying bridge was built on Romney Road, at which time the old footbridge was destined to be scrapped.

Kendal Civic Society launched a successful campaign to rescue it - and re-site it to its present position .........................
