The Rowan Tree Or Mountain Ash.

The rowan has a long history in folklore as a tree which protects against witchcraft and enchantment. One characteristic being the five pointed star on top of each berry which is an ancient symbol of protection. The wood of the tree is strong and resilient, making excellent walking sticks, also suitable for carving. It is used for tool handles, spindles and spinning wheels. The twigs were used for divining, especially for metal. The Druids used the berries and bark to make a dye for their garments. The Scots made a strong spirit from the berries, the Welsh brewed Ale and the Irish used them to flavour mead. Also rowan berry jelly is still made to be eaten with game. The tree is near my window and the berries have only recently appeared.
