Burwick telegraph terminal

We took a walk around Burwick, north of Scalloway.

Our walks book described the route, but didn't suggest there would be a lot to see. However when we stopped on the shore near the crofts at Burwick, a very helpful lady came out on her quad bike to talk to us. Mainly she wanted to suggest a correction to the route, but she also took a few minutes to tell us what we could see.

This hut was the terminal for an telegraph cable to Faroes and Iceland, laid in 1906. Nearby is a winch remaining from an unsuccessful "chariot" raid in 1942 on the Tirpitz (Operation Title).

We also the remains of a Neolithic house (extra photo), similar to Stanydale but smaller, and burnt mounds. There were terns, oystercatchers and golden plover, too.
