North Door St Botolph's Church, Hadstock

Today has to be one of the most miserable summers day that I can remember. We even flipped on the central heating for a bit this morning.  I had a drive over to Hadstock, just over the border in Essex to take some photos but it started to rain again just as I got there...

St Botolph's is a very old church said to have been founded by Cnut in 1020 to commemorate the Battle of Assandun thought to have taken place not far away in Ashdon. Certainly this door has been dated by dendrochronology to between 1034 - 1042 which makes it the oldest door and doorway in the country in use for its original purpose. Quite something to think that people have been passing in and out through this door for just about 1,000 years.
