Steam

Some of us went to Steam - the old Swindon railway works that are now a museum. There was something for everyone: metal and mechanics and interviews about their working life with people who used to work there.

The interviews were fascinating - with a woman whose job was reclaimed by men in 1945, a man deafened by the noise of the works, a fireman whose job vanished with the arrival of diesel engines.

They made it very clear why we have Health and Safety legislation. 'Red tape' saves limbs and lives. Let's hope we can hang on to some of it.

This is in the pit underneath 'Caerphilly Castle', built in 1923.
