Peninsula Light

An early start, at Mellon Udrigle. Had left the kayak (visible) in the dunes the night before, to save having to lug it so far, and avoid making much noise when the other campsite folk would sensibly be asleep. Launched at 6:00 am on a flat calm sea.

A four mile open crossing, keeping an eye out for any Calmac ferries crossing The Minch, to and from Ullapool. Had reckoned it would take about an hour, and near bang on 7:00, I reached Priest Island. Went a short distance, with a wee explore of some caves arches etc., and then on to one of the few possible landings (there would be fewer in most other craft). A break, some breakfast, and a look about.

It was now hot, but still no wind, not even a breeze. Back in the boat, and paddle around the island. Most of it we didn't see on the Club's most recent visit, as the sea was fairly rough, and the less crazy adventurous members sensibly thought better of heading out into the lumpy bits, from the sheltered side There's a big cave come arch, that's like a short tunnel, on the North West corner. It was an easy explore today, but we wouldn't have been able to go close in the previous conditions. Had a £20 waterproof film camera with me*, but wished I had a digital one.

Another stop on the West side, which normally would be pounded by waves, and kept well clear of. Then further around to reach the starting point. Brief snack on the water, and head those four miles back to Mellon Udrigle. Another flat calm crossing, with a pair of Bonxies (Great Skua's) grudgingly taking to the wing as I came very close. Was back on the beach just before mid-day. A wee bit earlier than I'd thought likely the day before.

The main reason for heading off so early, was to cut the time being exposed to the winds that normally pick up during the day, peaking about 14:00, before slowly easing. On this day that didn't happen. It just stayed flat calm, and beautifully sunny.

Decided to stay another night at the "limited facilities" campsite.

Extras:
 - one of a possible three easy-ish East coast landings, conditions permitting.
 - one most unlikely West coast landing. Note the fish boxes pushed way up the shore by wind and waves.

* - Uploading this in July 2017, and that film camera still has an unfinished spool in it, from this time! Can't remember if I took any shots on the water with it that day. I do recall using it the following day. Must finish it some day...
