Lochearnhead Highland Games

Our first morning on the station was a round robin of various introductions and explanations of the multi-activity programme for the scouts and explorers. For me that meant having them practice setting up stoves and preparing high camp (expedition) food.

From lunchtime onwards we enjoyed the local Highland Games. There were traditional sports and Scottish dancing to watch and then sports that we could join in with if we wished to. Lots of the kids ran in short races or did long jump etc. An astounding 16 explorers entered the fell race and one of them won the youth section! He does run at home but we don't really have hills to practice on!

My main blip is a smiling participant. She didn't win but she did a good job of 'flying the flag'. All of our young people did Hertfordshire Scouts proud and it was fun to marshall/ cheer them on.

Of course I had a bit of time hanging around. The extras are (I think) a Fly Agaric right outside my cabin and three abundant wild flowers: Bog Asphodel, St John's Wort & Yellow Mountain Saxifrage. (Not sure about this as v limited internet access so can't check)

The evening was a real rush to get ready for a hiking expedition starting tomorrow with wild camping overnight.
