Comma

...But this is no ordinary Comma, this is Polygonia c-album ssp. c-album f hutchinsoni.
Comma's that emerge in early summer are much paler in appearance than those which emerge later and will overwinter as adults. The ground colour is about the same as the palest parts of the darker specimens, with the underside being pale orangy/yellowy brown with just a few greenish spots as opposed to the almost black underside of the autumn winter species, and they are often a little larger and less 'jagged' in appearance.
I assume this is because the autumn / winter species need the darker coloration and more 'broken' outline for camouflage while in hibernation as adults.
Nature  (and God) never ceases to amaze me
