Happy Birthday Switzerland

Today, 1st of August, is the Swiss National Day. Although the founding of the Swiss Confederacy was first celebrated on this date in 1891 and annually since 1899, it has only been an official holiday since 1994.

It all began with the pacte du Grutli (Grütlischwur) placed in "early August", when "three Alpine cantons swore the oath of confederation" (Schwyz, Uri and Unterwald), an action which later came to be regarded as the founding of Switzerland.

Today we celebrated this day with the usual: friends, typical Swiss breakfast, fireworks and games. For breakfast we had roesti, hard boiled eggs, fried eggs, cold meet cuts, cheese, breat (Zopf) and coffee. After that we enjoyed the warm weather playing pétanque and after that, when it started to rain, a round of ludo. My friend M who I visited before already did a great job hosting 9 people this day. Not easy with a year old girl!
