avoid the steps or slope

this is the tramway or clif lift in scarborough. There used to be four of them now only two this one used to be the central one . as one tram comes up the other tram gose down. The lift was designed for steam operation, this was housed away from the top station. The driver has no view of the cars so used marks on the rope to indicate car positions.
In 1910 this was converted to electric drive. In 1932 the cars were replaced and the motor placed under the top station. Control was from a driving position at the top of the station with full view of the cars. For emergency use each car is fitted with a screw on and wedge safety brake . at the time of this photo take it costs 0.75p to go up or to go down on this tram and only takes about 30 secs
if you dont yous this you got alot of steps or a very steep hill to the town or the promenade (beach) in the blip you can only see one tram the other is out of shot
