Toplis Cottage

In 1986 and under the title The Monocled Mutineer the BBC aired a four-part adaptation of the Toplis story written by play-right Alan Bleasdale and starring Paul McGann of Withnail and I fame as Percy. Criticised at the time as being "riddled with error" the dramatisation not only glorified the English Dillinger but failed to use the actual location in which the Tomintoul shootings took place; instead substituting an ornate red-roofed cottage of uncertain, and certainly un-Scottish, origin. The genuine location, locally known as Toplis Cottage, lies hidden in full view of passing traffic on the A939 just a few miles south of Tomintoul. That is of course if you know where to look.
