A Day off from Painting

We took a day off from the painting and diy at home today and met up with some Dutch friends who are staying at Hesket Newmarket on holiday here. The weather was glorious so we packed up some lunch and headed off for a walk at Caldbeck.

We haven't been there for a while and it was nice to revisit the village. This is a picture of "The Howk", the ruins of an old bobbin mill last used in the 1920's. Apparently it had the largest waterwheel in the country at the time - 3ft wide and 42ft in diameter

It's set in a limestone gorge with waterfalls beyond it which was in full spate after the recent rain.

We definitely had the best part of the day as (after enjoying tea and cake in the village garden tea room) it clouded over and has been raining ever since
