winter radish...

...or daikon and nothing like the cute little plum coloured bulbs of the traditional radish, fine sliced in a salad or pickle.

Daikon means 'big root' and these look like giant parsnips, stacked and glowing in the recently relocated greengrocers at Mum's local shopping centre.

Destined for pickling, ferementing and stir frying it is also used in 'carrot cake but without the carrot!' chai tow (carrot or radish) kway (cake).
As a non baker this will not be featuring in our household!
