peening

Strange weather for August - one minute it's sunny, the next it's like being under an enormous power shower...

In between drenchings (and sometimes during them) D and I continued our country pursuits. I picked loads of blackberries and made 9 jars of jam. D peened his scythe.

If you want to know more about peening, you can read all about it HERE - there are also a few videos..

.Suffice to say that it is a way of cold forging a scythe blade, drawing metal down to the edge so that it can be sharpened or repaired. D has made himself a special peening log with a hole in the top for holding the jig. In the photo he is peening a bush blade, which only needs doing occasionally as it's a thick blade for coping with rugged vegetation rather than grass. It can all get rather technical. Makes for an interesting photo, though :-)
