Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Alas poor bridge!

When we went on holiday there was a foot-bridge over the Foveran Burn; when we came home it had gone! The footbridge had been gifted to Newburgh in 1902 by one of village's most famous sons, Clipper Captain Thomas Fiddes Spalding, so as to allow easy access to the golf links.

Since then the bridge had been maintained by the community in a sound and safe condition. But then, in 1996, Aberdeenshire Council took over the bridge, since when nothing, not a bean, has been spent on its maintenance, and inevitably the bridge fell into disrepair.

In April 2015, the the council decided that the dilapidated structure was no longer fit for purpose and closed it to the public. Two years later they have demolished it! Shame on them!

The "extra" is from our recent visit to France and was taken in the Normandy village of Brionne. The village was liberated in August 1944 by the First Canadian Army. One of the soldiers involved was my father.
