Compare and contrast

Most of the sweet peas grown today are "Spencer" varieties with large frilly flowers and long stems making them ideal for cut flowers and exhibitions. Sweet peas that are more than 100 years old or have the same form, size and vigour of the oldest varieties are known as "Old Fashioned". For comparison here we have Daily Mail (on the left) a Spencer variety which was introduced in 1997 and Painted Lady (on the right) the earliest variety, which dates from 1752. Daily Mail scores 3/6 on the scent scale compared with 5/6 for Painted Lady.
