bait...

...or bouilloned (is there such a word?).
The pipi...shuffled out of soft sand with wiggling and burrowing feet at ocean edge...is an edible burrowing salt water clam endemic to eastern Australia.
The pipi was considered to be bait in South Australia until Italian immigrants introduced vongole (baby clams).
And here it is many a mile from a fish hook on an estuary or each fishing rod and poached in a ginger, lemongrass and chili broth.
YUMMM!
