Disturbing

This is the most terrifying looking mushroom I've ever seen. I somehow don't think it grew this way - I feel like something weird happened to it. But what do I know? Could be just an evil mushroom. I found it while I was mowing the rather vast area down at the end of the driveway this morning. It was on the edge, so it's still there, unmolested by me or my mower.

Edit: According to Ceridwen, it's an "Old Man of the Woods" and is edible!!!! But...
