Wedding klang na

This was a hugely fun wedding, which was more hedonistic than most I've been to. Friends Kate and Robin got hitched in Cornwall, near Bodmin Moor. Both worked with me in Cambridge and ended up working in conservation in Cambodia too; Kate is a colleague in the UK again now we've both returned. I enjoy having pre-work breakfasts with these two, reminiscing about life overseas.

I've never lost a northern-born sense of miserliness and need to reduce wastage, which at weddings lend themselves to mopping up leftover champagne and wine from the table when guests move away. (I've also never lost a student mindset about drinking that can see me go weeks without a drop, but then on big nights out overdo it).

Memories start to become hazy after the mopping up of wine and post-dinner coffee, but certainly there was energetic dancing, an under-the-legs slide during Footloose and some photos of calves (including the bride's) being sent to a friend in Australia who always send us his when he's completed games of touch rugby. It was all a bit ridiculous, but so much FUN.

Kate is dancing Khmer style, twisting and inverting her hands. Men traditionally do the same across the dance floor. This was the main nod to Cambodian culture. No one was donating fruit to a centrally located table or depositing envelopes of money to officious-looking family members at the entrance, who always carefully note each person's contribution. It would be unacceptable not to repay the gift at a future wedding.

The dancing reminds me of the cultural (mis)appropriation that Kate and I do when badly imitating Cambodian accents in the office. We should lessen this to maintain a professional veneer.
