Capture

Events have caused me to visit the Springburn area of north Glasgow a few times in recent weeks. One of the streets I have either driven along or passed by is called Wallacewell Road. This is a reference to the fact that there is a nearby site called Wallace's Well, associated with the Scottish patriot (I'm using that term for convenience rather than making a political point) William Wallace.

It is said that Wallace stayed in a house in the area when he was passing through - no trace of the house now exists - and that he probably drank from the well that now bears his name. The monument pictured in my Blip was erected around 1900 to mark the site of the house where Wallace was betrayed and captured on 5th August 1305. He was taken to London and following his trial for treason was hung, drawn and quartered on 23rd August that year.

The monument area has been landscaped significantly since my last visit, no doubt in relation to the extensive house-building developments nearby.
