Slow travel

I love travelling on a ferry. Watching a boat come in, and then boarding it, is like stepping into another world. And instead of being allocated a seat, you can walk around and choose a place, then change it and change it again. I love sitting on deck, yes even when it is windy and not that warm, watching the sea. There is something magical about seeing one bit of land recede and then eventually another bit of land appear and get closer. This is travelling at a sedate pace.

This afternoon we travelled from Uig on Skye to Lochmaddy on North Uist and it was a lovely crossing in sunshine. The coast of Skye got further away, but was still recognisable (as here) and then North Uist appeared and we watched until we were so close to the harbour we could just about touch it.

And now we are settled in our wonderful house and the wind is getting up. It’s actually quite wild and supposed to get wilder, but we are cosy and have wonderful views in every direction. Geese flying overhead, smoked salmon purchased from the Smokehouse on our way to the house, is ready to eat and wine is poured . . .
