Fritillaria - What's in a Name.

There is another cold frame full of pots here. A miscellany of different hardy bulbs, narcissus, fritillaria, galanthus, iris, romulea, gagea, more narcissus .... and crocus!

These are Fitillaria hermonis subspecies amana Anti-Lebanon form, rather a mouthful. Frtillaria, like the chequered Snakeshead Fritillary , Fritillaria meleagris sold in garden centres; hermonis ssp amana, it's a different species; it grows in the Anti-Lebanon mountains which form the border between Lebanon and Syria. Look closely and you can see the new growing shoot in the centre of the bulbs. The flowers in Spring will be green with some brown chequering ..... bet you can't wait ;)
