Cancale (Brittany) and its oyster beds

Cancale is a medium-sized town on the western coast of the Bay of St Michel.

This photo, taken at low tide, shows the 7.3kms of oyster beds which comprise by far the most important industry in the town.  The annual harvest from the beds is about 25,000 tons, about a fifth of the total oyster production in France.  (This is extremely strenuous work!)
