fleeting visions

harvest

This is the most glorious season, especially if you like food. Peaches and cherries and strawberries are perfectly fine. But they don't keep like squashes and beets and carrots and apples. Summer fruits are sweet and ephemeral, but autumn fruits are rich and filling, tasting of soil and frosty air and their own particular sweetness that belongs to winter days and cosy evenings at home. Today, as I enjoyed a homemade squash soup with a gorgeous velvety texture, I felt warmed to my toes. I'm looking forward to tasting the best of the harvest that has been "put away" -- canned and frozen over the past few weeks -- in the middle of the cold bleak season to come.
