Into the Orifice

Driving around the Parish of Bourtie looking for blips this evening (as many of you will have guessed by now, Bourtie is a good place to find them after a day in the Inverurie office), it was the simple granite slab, acting as a kind of primitive footbridge over the ditch beside the road, that first caught my attention.

On stopping the car to take a closer look, my eye was immediately drawn to the sphincter-like orifice in the mud and algae at the bottom of the ditch, into which various small twigs and leaves were being swept as they were carried along by the current.
