Anne's Daily Encounters

walking with my son

while i am on holidays in crete my son is walking with a group of dutch hikers on the trails across the hills and mountains here along the south coast. he invited me to join them for a day and receiving this invitation here was one of the dearest gifts to me. so this tuesday i walked along with them and enjoyed it all as much as the others and maybe more, cause i'm his mum.

we walked the stretch over the hills and along the shoreline from Paleochora to Sougia, some 16 kms but had to climb 560 mtrs and get them down again too:) never before the walk had lasted him as many hours as with us, but we always had the excuse that the sun was burning, as he did and there's no shade there and we were 3 elderly amongst the 40+ and 40- and one of them had a broken shoe (the sole had disconnected and was repaired skillfully by my son for the day - the following day I took that man along to chania city and helped him buy a new pair and off he went with a taxi to join the group again that had arrived at Omalos after climbing up the 1100 mtrs)

my son is the 2nd on the left in this blip and he explains about the geology out here; karst mountain that is that the rainwaters run down the softer layers of the rocks and thus all kinds of holes can be found in the rocks we walked on and ofcours underneath lots of caves are formed over the centuries; but we walked on top.
i'll add some other pix of this later on; a beauty of a kyklamino as large as the nail of my small finger
