If Ruskin were alive today....

We have a very good weekly local paper here in Sheffield. Never a week goes by without at least one letter, often more, and sometimes news items about a burning issue being discussed. The council have contracted a firm to look after highways. The problem is that the plan includes the chopping down of a significant number of mature roadside trees, many of which are perfectly healthy. It is a long and convoluted story in which many believe that the council are riding roughshod over the wishes of local people, and over environmentally important issues. Sheffield has long been proud of itself as a green city, with a huge number of parks and open spaces as well as stunning tree-lined suburban streets. Understandably this arguement has become a issue that has provoked interest beyond the city. This is one of this week's letters which I found particularly interesting.
