J.M & Co

A rainy day today. At lunch time I blipped this structure in St. Sampsons. The plaque on it reads J.M & Co 1890. The JM is for John Mowlem. His company was one of the largest granite exporters in Guernsey. It was a national company, although Mowlem lived for a short while in Guernsey around 1839. The tower was actually built to house a chimney for a steam powered crusher. John Mowlem owned several quarries plus this yard by the harbour where there was a weighbridge, workshops and offices. There was also a yard on Southside.
