Pretoria Mining Disaster

Popped into the library this morning to see the painting commissioned from local artist Andrew Smith.  The scene is the pit-head at the Pretoria mine on 21at December 1910 where the local folk gathered desperate for news of the miners below after the massive underground explosion.  Tragically 344 men and boys died the central figure depicts a young lad looking for news of his dad and the work is entitled  "Ast sin mi dad?"  "Have you seen my dad?"  The painting is 10ft by 5ft and is an impressive work I love the vibrant colours and details.  Almost every local family was affected and the disaster is still commemorated every December in the town.
