In The Occupied Territory

Down by the water

Down by the water again.
I would not like to live somewhere that was not reasonably hear the sea or a river. Water is soothing and fascinating.
Some of our best travel stories have involved water.
When we were in Luxor, Egypt back in 2001, jus weeks after 9/11, we found a wonderful, local travel guide called Sahid.
On one occasion we expressed our desire to sail the Nile on a faluka. He knew some-one who had just bought one, and because his friend had no experience of sailing it, his friend had hired somebody who could.
Going up the river was fine, but coming back you had to zig-zag on the water to reach the appropriate shore. Well, the river was very busy with Nile cruise boats that day, creating a load of waves and washes making it difficult to steer.
The faluka was sailing along, basically on it's side, like racing yachts, wit our guide shouting at the captain for nearly drowning his passengers (us) and the the captain shouting at the guy sailing the boat and June and I holding on to save us being capsized into the grubby water. All the while laughing our heads off and having so much fun.
