Nick Drake

I don't know how many of you know of Nick Drake. He was a young singer, songwriter and guitarist who visited us briefly with three wonderful records between 1969  and 1972. None of them sold at the time and he was crushed, withdrawing into almost catatonic depression. He died in 1974 of an overdose of anti-depressants. The verdict was suicide, but its hard to tell. Since the late eighties there has been a revival of interest in Nick's music, he's even provided the soundtrack for a VW advert. ('Pink Moon.')

I've been re-reading Patrick Humphries excellent biography which gives a rounded picture of the young singer's life and assesses his worth quite fairly. He quotes so many of Nick's friends and musical colleagues that certain perceptions tend to repeat themselves, such as Drake' total unease of performing in front of an audience, and his eventual avoidance of it. (One of the reasons his records failed to sell.)

The music is best speaking for itself, so I've put in a couple of links. The photo shows my treasured copy of 'Bryter Layter,' (a Nick Drake-ism, if there ever was one), signed by producer, Joe Boyd.
