Rag Tree

This is the Rag Tree or Cloutie Well near Munlochy, north of Inverness. It is one of two in the region. The idea was that the well had healing properties, and you placed a rag on the tree corresponding to the part of the body you wanted to heal. It is a very ancient thing, probably pre-Christian.

I was disappointed to see things like national flags, and a whole duvet attached to a tree today. OK, you may want to heal your country, or your bed, but it looks like you're having a laugh or missing the point. It didn't used to be like this, even ten years ago, when the custom seemed to be more respected.

The area covered with clouts pretty spread out. I have only photographed a small part.
