The Cordelia

Another visit to the ever-interesting harbour at Peterhead.

The photograph involves the Cordelia a beam-trawler from Inverness.  A beam trawl consists of a cone-shaped net ending in a bag or cod-end, which retains the catch. In beam trawls the horizontal opening of the net is provided by a beam, made of wood or metal, which is up to 12 m long. Two beam trawls are used, one to each side of the vessel. When fishing for bottom-dwelling flatfish the beam trawl is usually equipped with chains and rough netting, known as ticklers, to disturb the fish from the seabed.
