Beneath Biscay

Route 66

Getting our kicks, or at least going on holiday, heading down Portugal way, down the Autovia A-66.

The autopista follows the route of the old Roman road from Gijón (handily) in the north, down to Seville, known as the Ruta de la Plata.

We turn of west at Merida for Portugal, via Badajoz where we had been planning to stop the night until a friend persuaded us to stay just over the border in the small town of Elvas.

Extras are of our pit stop for a bite and a drink at the 'La Prensa Merendero' bar, near Zamora and the other one of the immense viaduct in Elvas.

Apart from the viaduct Elvas boasts not one but two large bastioned forts. One of these houses the town itself, while the other is on the outskirts. If we have another opportunity to visit Elvas we must stop for at least a couple of nights for a better look round.

In the evening tried some 'artesenal' beers then had a good evening meal at the 'O Lagar' restaurant in Elvas.
