Enduring Eye. National Library.

If you want to be a hero go with Scott, if you want to get there go with Amundsen, if you want to get back go with Shackleton.

The National Library has a free exhibition on showing Hurley's photos of Shackleton's adventure in the Antarctic. In my opinion the man was nuts. Brilliant, incredible and nuts. But he got everyone home. The only thing missing was Blackborow's toes. He was a stowaway, he knew which ship he was on and where it was going, he had been rejected when he applied to join the crew. Blackborow proved an asset to the ship as a steward and was eventually signed on, though under the promise that he would be the first eaten should they run out of food or should the men starve.

Photography was encouraged (thus today's blip) and I am still astonished that three guys set sail in the antarctic ocean in a dinghy only just big enough to act as a ship's tender in an attempt to fetch help for the group stranded on elephant island.

They made it too.

Nuts. I'm telling you. Completely nuts.
