Zugspitze

We camped near Hohenpeißenberg and as the morning was fine drove up the hill of the same name to see the view. It certainly didn’t disappoint, with a great view south to the snowy Bavarian Alps; the Zugspitze is the highest hill on the right. Hohenpeißenberg has the oldest mountain weather station in the world with records going back to 1781. Unsurprisingly the decade from 2001 to 2010 has shown an increase in average temperature compared to the decades 1951 to 1980 with summer now 1.8 centigrade warmer and spring not far behind. Autumn and winter are not as much warmer with winter only 0.6 higher. That increase is mainly due to warmer nights down to greater cloud cover. We decided that with snow in the hills we would cycle round the Ammersee, and the extra is a rather nice way the locals announce the birth of a baby.

Yesterday’s blip.
